Eric's Story: A Testimony of Hope, Healing, and Restoration

Eric was born in Ghana and lived with his younger sister at their grandparent’s house until he was 12. Life in Ghana was difficult, with struggles that seemed endless. His parents were divorced, and his father and mother both lived abroad. At school, Eric faced constant rejection. His teachers and headteacher would often tell him that he was worthless, repeating the cruel words, “Nothing good will ever come out of you.” These words, spoken without compassion, deeply affected his emotional and mental well-being.

Eric began to believe them, feeling like there was no hope for his future. He always dreamt of moving abroad to be with his parents, imagining that life would be better. And in 1990, that dream finally seemed within reach. Eric and his sister were given the chance to move to Canada to live with their father. It was a dream come true—or so it seemed. But what followed was nothing short of a nightmare.

Upon arriving in Canada, Eric’s life was plunged into a cycle of horrific physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his stepmother. She hated him with a passion, treating her own children well, while subjecting Eric and his sister to cruelty. She would withhold food from them, lock Eric in his room for hours, and sometimes even encourage her children to turn against them.

Eric was the only son to his father, and his stepmother feared that he would inherit his father’s possessions one day. She was determined to ensure that wouldn’t happen. Eric endured a reality where he was forced to go to school hungry, often begging his friends for food, or stealing from the supermarket just to survive. At home, he was constantly told that if he ever revealed what was happening to anyone, there would be even worse consequences.

Yet, in the midst of his deepest despair, there was something—an inner voice—that kept assuring him that everything would be okay. It was a flicker of hope, a light in the darkness, though he could not yet see how things could ever improve. The abuse lasted until 1992, when Eric’s mother, living in London, sensed that something was wrong. She invited Eric and his sister to spend Christmas with her, and it was during this time that she learned of the full extent of the abuse. In 1993, after filing a case, Eric and his sister were granted permission to live in the UK, and they left Canada behind.

Starting over in London, Eric was still carrying the weight of deep emotional scars. He was filled with hatred and unforgiveness towards his father and stepmother for the years of torment. Even in this new chapter of life, he faced further disappointments from people he trusted, deepening his feelings of betrayal. It felt as though life itself was conspiring to destroy his destiny. But even in the darkest of times, there was a flicker of hope. Jeremiah 29:11, a verse he held onto, spoke to him: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

This verse became his lifeline, reminding him that God’s plans for him were greater than anything he had experienced. Eric had grown up in a Christian home, but he didn’t truly know Jesus. It was at the age of 14, during a Youth Faith Camp in Peterborough, that Eric had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. He gave his life to Christ and began to experience the healing power of God’s love. Over time, God healed Eric’s broken heart, helping him to forgive those who had hurt him.

In this process, Eric discovered his purpose: to use his gifts of music and songwriting to share the love of God with the world. From the child who was once told he was worthless, from the boy who felt abandoned and rejected, Eric has become an international artist, a worship leader, a singer-songwriter, and an evangelist. His music has touched hearts and brought people closer to God. He is also the Membership Director of the Great Commission Society, the founder of Spontaneous Worship, the co-founder of The Music and Media Platform Awards (TMMP Awards), and a Youth Ambassador in the UK.

Eric’s story is not just one of survival, but of thriving against the odds. His life is a powerful testimony of God’s mercy and grace, proving that no matter how deep the wounds or how dark the past, God can restore and transform. Eric’s mission today is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, sharing His love and gospel with as many people as possible. He wants his testimony to shine as a light to the lost, offering hope and restoration to those who are struggling with their own pain and challenges.

Eric’s heart is particularly focused on empowering and mentoring young people who have faced similar struggles. He wants to show them that their past does not define their future, and that God has a plan for their lives—a plan full of hope and purpose.

Today, Eric stands as a living example of God’s power to turn any situation around. From a life of hopelessness, he has risen to a place of influence, using his platform to inspire and uplift others. His message is clear: with God, nothing is impossible. If God can turn his life around, He can do the same for anyone. And this is the message Eric carries with him wherever he goes—there is always hope, there is always. healing, and there is always a future in Christ.
